Trogir Boat Rental Without a License

The 5-metre rule, applied to Trogir

Croatia allows anyone 18 or over to drive a rented boat without any licence — but only a boat under 5 metres with an engine under 5 kW (about 6.8 hp), and only within 500 metres of the nearest shore. Trogir's old town sits on a small islet wedged between the mainland and the island of Čiovo, separated from Čiovo by a channel only about 100 metres wide — narrow and sheltered enough that the legal envelope comfortably covers it, plus a reasonable stretch of near-shore coastline on either side.

What the rule does not cover is the typical 40–60 hp rental speedboat, and it never covers open-water legs toward Šolta, the Drvenik islands or the Blue Lagoon. For those you need a boat licence or an ICC, or you take the boat with a skipper. Most Trogir rental operators mark out their own permitted zone on top of the law — usually the old-town channel and the inner Kaštela Bay side — so check the contract's map before you assume a route is included.

Where the rental boats actually are

Trogir's own waterfront is the Riva, the town quay that runs along the old town's seafront a short walk from the cathedral and the loggia — this is where most local day-boat and self-drive rental operators moor and hand over. It's compact by Dalmatian standards, which makes finding your boat considerably easier than the sprawl of Split's harbour.

Across the channel on Čiovo island sits ACI Marina Trogir, one of Croatia's better-known marinas: 174 berths (35 of them dry berths), able to take vessels up to 30 m for a daily stay and 20 m for annual moorings. The fixed bridge connecting the old town to Čiovo doesn't open and only clears boats up to 2.60 m in height, so the marina runs a dinghy transfer service across the roughly 300 m channel for anyone not making the short walk over the bridge itself. As on the Split side of the bay, a real share of week-long bareboat and crewed charters marketed as "Split" actually hand over in Trogir or neighbouring Kaštela — both nearer Split Airport than Split's own city centre — so read your booking confirmation carefully.

What's actually reachable, and what isn't

The practical read: a compliant no-licence boat can honestly manage the old-town channel and a calm-day run along Čiovo's near shore, but anything crossing open water toward Šolta or the Drvenik islands needs a licensed boat, an ICC, or a skipper. Treat any Trogir rental listing that casually promises "Blue Lagoon included" on an unlicensed boat with real scepticism — the distance alone rules it out.

The Blue Lagoon: why your rental boat can't just go

The Blue Lagoon, a shallow turquoise bay near Drvenik Veli island, is one of the most-photographed day-trip destinations in central Dalmatia — and it is also, from Trogir, a genuine open-water crossing: roughly 9–11 nautical miles each way. That distance alone puts it outside what a no-licence rental is legally allowed to do, since the 500 m-from-shore limit was never designed for a crossing of that length.

The workable options from Trogir are the same organised excursion boats that run daily from Split and Trogir in season (usually bundling Šolta, Drvenik and the lagoon into one day) or a skippered private charter that handles the navigation for you. Both are worth booking ahead in July and August, when the lagoon gets crowded by midday.

Trogir or Split for your Croatia boat day?

Choose Trogir when a calmer, prettier base matters more than fleet size: the UNESCO old town sits right on the water, Split Airport is about 5 minutes away — closer than it is to Split's own city centre — and the harbour is a fraction of the size of Split's, so finding your boat is simple. Choose Split when you want the widest choice of rental operators and the busiest onward-island connections — Hvar, Brač and Vis all run with more frequency and more operators from Split's Riva and ACI marina. The two towns are barely 25 km apart, so a lot of "Split" week-charters actually check in from Trogir or Kaštela anyway — worth confirming either way before you fly in.
