Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

For a bareboat charter, you'll need an ICC (International Certificate of Competence) or equivalent national licence, plus a VHF radio operator certificate. If you don't have a licence, you can hire a skipper through your charter company for approximately €150–€200/day. Crewed charters require no sailing experience.
The sweet spot is May–June and September–October: prices are 20–30% lower than peak season, the sea is warm (21–24°C), and there are fewer crowds. July–August is peak season with higher prices but guaranteed sunshine. Most operators run May through October.
APA stands for Advance Provisioning Allowance — typically 30–35% of the base charter rate. It covers running costs during the trip: fuel, harbour fees, food, drink, and crew gratuity. Unused funds are refunded at the end. On a €15,000/week charter, expect a €4,500–5,250 APA.
Montenegro levies 0% VAT on charter fees for foreign-flagged vessels. Croatia charges 13% VAT. On a €20,000/week charter, that's a €2,600 saving. Porto Montenegro (Tivat) and Herceg Novi are the primary charter bases. See our full VAT guide for how to structure your itinerary.
For peak season (July–August), book 6–12 months ahead for the best vessel selection. Shoulder season (May–June, September) can often be booked 3–6 months ahead. Last-minute deals do appear under 60 days but selection is limited.
