The Elaphiti route is sold two ways: shared "three islands" excursions from Gruž harbour at a per-person price, and private charters where you pay for the boat. The crossover point is a group of about four — below that, shared tours win on price; above it, a private boat costs similar money and gives you the whole day back. High-season ranges below; May and October typically run 20–30% lower.

The Three Islands, Honestly Ranked
Sixteen kilometres of archipelago, three inhabited islands, three different jobs. A good skipper strings them together in this order — caves while the sea is glassy, sand in the middle of the day, lunch when you are ready to slow down.
First Stop
Koločep — the caves
The nearest island, about 3 nautical miles from Gruž and car-free. Its seaward cliffs hide swim-through sea caves that need a calm morning sea — this is why private tours leave early and group boats often skip the caves entirely.
Middle of the Day
Lopud — the beach
Around 7 nautical miles out, also car-free, with a proper harbour front for coffee. The reason to come is Šunj: an 800-metre horseshoe of genuine sand in a shallow bay — a rarity on this pebble coast, and far easier reached by boat than by the walk over the hill.
Long Lunch
Šipan — the table
The largest and furthest of the three, all olive groves and quiet stone villages. Konoba lunches in Šipanska Luka or Suđurađ are the anchor of a full-day itinerary; ask your skipper to reserve a table when you book the boat.
Half Day or Full Day? Decide by Appetite, Not Price
A half-day tour is four hours dock to dock. That genuinely covers Koločep's caves and one swim stop, and it suits cruise passengers and anyone protecting an Old Town afternoon. What it does not do is cover three islands — if a listing promises Koločep, Lopud and Šipan in four hours, you will spend most of it in transit and none of it on Šunj beach.
The full day is where the route earns its reputation: out by 9am, caves before the breeze, two hours on the sand, a 90-minute lunch on Šipan and a slow cruise home. Per hour on the water it is usually cheaper than the half day. If anyone in your group has asked "can we stop for lunch somewhere?", the decision is already made — book the full day.
Time the Caves Around the Maestral
The Elaphiti day has a rhythm set by one wind. On a normal summer day the maestral, a northwesterly sea breeze, wakes up late morning, stiffens through the afternoon and fades around sunset. Mornings are the calm window — which matters because Koločep's caves are only comfortable (or possible) to enter on a flat sea, and the afternoon return leg can turn choppy on a small open boat. Experienced skippers run the route caves-first and keep the homeward leg in the islands' lee; if your operator proposes caves at 4pm, that is a red flag worth questioning.
The other wind to respect is the jugo, a warm southeasterly that builds swell over a day or two and is the usual cause of shortened or rescheduled tours, mostly in spring and autumn. Book your boat day early in your Dubrovnik stay so a jugo costs you a reshuffle, not the trip.
Seven Questions to Ask Before Paying
Quotes for the same route can differ by hundreds of euros for reasons hidden in the inclusions. Get answers to these before the deposit: Is fuel included for the full three-island route? Is the skipper's fee inside the price? Exactly where is pickup — Gruž, the Old Town port, or a hotel pier? Are drinks, towels and snorkelling gear aboard? Will the skipper reserve the lunch table (and is lunch itself extra — it almost always is)? What is the cancellation policy if the captain calls off the day for weather? And how many guests is the boat licensed for — a "12-person" hull can feel crowded with eight plus bags.
